A blend of animatronic puppets , real animals , and CGI Stitch was used to give the child actor a tangible interactor and to enhance performance realism: Legacy Effects created various animatronic Stitch puppets (including one for underwater scenes). These were used on set to guide the actors, then digitally removed during post-production. A French bulldog (Dale) was employed in certain scenes where Lilo mistakenly perceives Stitch as a dog.
